Grapevine's Main Street Goes Car-Free for Longer This Christmas. Here's How Locals Plan the Season Around It

October 29, 2026

"Due to the success of Historic Main Street weekend closures, we are now extending the closure to include Christmas week." That line ran in the City of Grapevine's December 24, 2025 e-news, about a month into last season. The city had started 2025 with a schedule of weekend closures. By Christmas it had added a full week.

The 2026 schedule picks up from there. The closures the city added in late December are now planned in from the start. For two long stretches of this season, Main Street between Northwest Highway and Dallas Road works as a pedestrian district, and the rest of your Christmas plans have to fit around those dates.

Last year's late fix is this year's starting plan

The city's November 19, 2025 e-news listed six separate closures, most running Friday to Monday. The Grapevine Convention & Visitors Bureau's 2026 writer's reference guide, current as of October 15, 2026, combines several of those into longer blocks.

Occasion 2025 schedule as first announced 2026 schedule
Carol of Lights Sun. Nov. 23, 1 p.m. to Mon. Nov. 24, midnight Sun. Nov. 22, 1 p.m. to Mon. Nov. 30, 6 a.m.
Thanksgiving weekend Fri. Nov. 28, 6 a.m. to Mon. Dec. 1, 9 p.m. Included in the block above
Parade of Lights Thu. Dec. 4, 6 p.m. to Mon. Dec. 8, 9 p.m. Thu. Dec. 3, 6 p.m. to Mon. Dec. 7, 6 a.m.
Drone show Included in the weekend closures Mon. Dec. 7, 6 p.m. to midnight
Mid-December weekend Fri. Dec. 12, 6 a.m. to Mon. Dec. 15, 6 a.m. Fri. Dec. 11, 6 a.m. to Mon. Dec. 14, 6 a.m.
Christmas stretch Weekends of Dec. 19 and Dec. 26, with Christmas week added in late December Fri. Dec. 18, 6 a.m. to Mon. Dec. 28, 6 a.m.

Two blocks matter most. The first closes Main Street for nearly eight days straight, from the Sunday before Carol of Lights through Thanksgiving weekend. Last year the street reopened between those two events. The second runs ten days, from the Friday before Christmas to the Monday after. Last year the city only reached that length after the late extension.

What fills the long closures

Moving more events into those blocks shifts a few traditions.

The free 38th Annual Carol of Lights, the official start of the season, is on Monday, November 23, from 4 to 8 p.m. The city lights the Christmas displays that evening. Jumpin' Junction has Christmas bounce houses, and the Frozen FunZone has a three-lane snow hill. Main Street stays closed for the rest of that week, so the snow hill evening runs straight into Thanksgiving with no traffic on the street in between.

The 47th Annual Parade of Lights steps off Thursday, December 3, at 7 p.m. The CVB lists more than 100 lighted floats and marching bands, and this year's theme is "Christmas Miracle on Main Street." The Grapevine Chamber keeps the parade on the first Thursday in December.

The drone show changed the most. In 2025 the city held two Merry & Bright shows with 400 drones each, on December 1 and December 8. The 6th Annual Merry & Bright Drone Show is a single show on Monday, December 7, at 7 p.m., with 600 drones launching from the Northwest Highway side. That gives one night to see it instead of two. If last year's second show was your fallback, you no longer have one.

Parking and transit when the street is closed

The closures make parking part of every plan. The CVB lists these free options for the season:

  • Grapevine Convention Center, 1201 Municipal Way, with a free shuttle
  • 307 W. Dallas Road
  • 410 W. Dallas Road
  • 636 S. Main Street
  • Limited spaces in the Historic Grapevine lots

The Grapevine Main Parking Garage at 255 E. Dallas Road charges a fee.

The CVB also lists a park-and-ride. DFW Airport North Station at 1867 E. Dallas Road is a stop on both the DART Silver Line and TEXRail, and the guide gives the TEXRail round-trip fare to Grapevine Main Station as $4, or $2 for seniors. Trains drop you at Peace Plaza, which puts you at the Peace Plaza Ice Rink and next to the Grapevine Christmas Market. DART's Silver Line timetable, effective October 19, 2026, shows trains at DFW Airport North every 30 minutes at peak times and every 60 minutes off-peak, with Sunday service on Thanksgiving Day. Trinity Metro's TEXRail schedule page has the current times on the Fort Worth side.

What's new this year

With the street closed to cars for longer, more of the season happens on foot. These are the 2026 additions within walking distance or a short drive.

A new tree at the Town Square Gazebo. The CVB calls the gazebo tree at 325 S. Main Street "brand new" this year. It has a drum with a train running inside, and it stands beside a sleigh, a carriage and a vintage Dodge truck presented by Grapevine Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram. The live Pacific Northwest tree is still at Peace Plaza.

A Harry Potter theme at Gaylord Texan. The Fort Worth Report found a Harry Potter ice attraction in a state filing in June. It noted that the resort used "Elf" last year, "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" in 2024 and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" in 2023. The official ice! page lists 10 scenes, a two-story ice slide and 2 million pounds of ice. It opens Friday, November 13, and runs through January 3, 2027.

Christmas at Dig World. The CVB marks this one as new. At 2200 W. Grapevine Mills Circle, visitors operate real heavy machinery among holiday lights. The event listing runs it daily from November 27 through December 24, with Construction Santa photos from December 18 to 24. Day passes start at $30.

A candle pop-up at RTown Gallery. On Sunday, December 13, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., RTown Gallery at 314 S. Main Street and Studio Assemblage host a custom candle pop-up. Entry is free, and candles start at $28. You can bring your own vessel. It falls on the mid-December closure weekend, so Main Street will be walking-only that day.

A few repeat events have dates worth noting now. Bad Santa's Boathouse, the Christmas pop-up at Big Daddy's Cantina at Scott's Landing Marina, opens November 6, and reservations are encouraged. The Holly Jolly Pop-Up Bar at Third Rail inside Harvest Hall opens November 20. Vetro Glassblowing Studio's ornament sessions start November 11 at $70 each and require reservations.

Already sold out, or close to it

Two railroad events need early planning, and one of them is already full.

The CVB says all three adults-only Christmas Wine Train departures are at capacity for 2026. Those trips are November 20 and December 10 and 17, at $56 per person.

Santa's North Pole Express tickets went on sale October 1. According to the Grapevine Vintage Railroad FAQ, tickets are sold online only. ADA seating is booked by phone. A two-seat bench costs $90, $96 or $100, depending on date and time. The ticket listing says tickets are nonrefundable and nontransferable, and it adds a 3% service fee. The train runs November 27 through December 30. It does not run December 24 or 25. On December 3, parade day, it runs five excursions from Fort Worth's Historic Stockyards Station.

The weekdays you can still drive downtown

The long closures also leave clear gaps. Use these windows to drive to a Main Street dinner reservation, pick up a gift or get to JudyPie's gingerbread class without walking in from a remote lot. They're based on the CVB's published closure times:

  1. Before 1 p.m. on Sunday, November 22. After that, the street is closed for the rest of Thanksgiving week.
  2. 6 a.m. Monday, November 30, to 6 p.m. Thursday, December 3. This is the longest open stretch before the parade.
  3. Monday, December 7, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The street closes again that evening for the drone show.
  4. Tuesday, December 8, through Thursday, December 10.
  5. 6 a.m. Monday, December 14, to 6 a.m. Friday, December 18. After this, the street is closed for ten days.

The CVB notes that all dates, times and prices can change. The city announced last year's extension in mid-season, so the five windows above could get shorter.
